Back when Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich was on the County Council (he’s been in public office for 35+ years in this county), he infamously made an invite to the Venezuelan ambassador (some Hugo Chavez crony) to visit Maryland and “potentially fund social programs”.
After all, what socialist utopia can be formed in MoCo, MD without the petroleum-money of a dictator like Hugo Chavez? It takes a lot of cashola to fund Elrich’s planned “free things for everyone” utopia.
Alas, it was not to be. The “Bolivarian Socialist Revolution” would not come to MoCo like then-Councilmember Elrich desired (per The Washington Examiner, August 2008):
Maryland officials have refused to interact with Venezuela in the past. In October 2007, Montgomery County Council member Marc Elrich, D-at large, withdrew an invitation to the Venezuelan ambassador to visit Maryland and potentially fund local social programs, after [County Executive] Ike Leggett frowned on the idea.
“Montgomery County can take care of its own problems. Thank you. No thank you,” Leggett stated at the time.
It was too radical for even “Tax Hike” Ike Leggett. Go figure.
Well fast-forward to the end of 2023, and with the world on proverbial fire under President Joe Biden… another conquest of a neighboring state and potential hot war now threatens to make headlines. Venezuela is threatening an annexation of Essequibo, encompassing two-thirds of neighboring Guyana.
“Caracas is gearing up for a referendum scheduled for December 3 and is making military preparations. The Brazilian army is on high alert.” writes user Jack Straw on X.com:
This potential conflict is much closer to home. And much more near and dear to ol’ Elrich’s heart. Does he support the annexation of territory from Guyana, one wonders? Many people theorize this is being done by the dictator in Venezuela to try and control still more oil resources, now discovered in Guyana. Will Elrich be flying a Guyanese flag in solidarity on Sunday?
Maybe he take some photos with Council President Evan Glass on Sunday in front of the Guyanese embassy, should this new geopolitical hot spot / aggression come to pass.
And with so much “colonizer” and “settler” talk in the air by a few local lefty radicals (these kinds of terms are used frequently by MD State Delegate Gabriel Acevero, for example in discussing Israel-Gaza), it’ll be fascinating to see the local Democrat politician response to Venezuela attempting this very Putin-esque maneuver over a smaller neighboring state, which has borders recognized by international orgs since 1899.
This is where ideology meets geopolitical realities and thuggery. Which way will “socialist” comrade Elrich swing?
More to come.
