After securing over 20,000 signatures, with 62% being Democrats, the effort to bring term limits to the County Executive position is meeting a new kind of resistance – vandalism. Question A appears on this year’s election ballot and, if it passes, will limit the County Executive to two terms.
Reardon Sullivan has reported that over 60% of term limit signs that have been put up across Montgomery County have been stolen or vandalized. After noticing this worrying trend, cameras, tracking devices, and other deterrent were put in place to stop this activity. Reardon shared with us videos that have captured recent vandalism and theft, including a video where the only sign taken was a sign support Question A.
Reardon told us:
It is obvious that the political elite in Montgomery County will resort to just about anything to stop term limits. They have decided to not play fair and have resorted to stealing our yard signs.
He also said that though a police report has been filed, rewards are being offered for any additional information, saying:
If anyone has any information on who this might be, please contact us ASAP. Reward offered to information resulting in an arrest.
As much as opponents have tried to brand this initiative as being a “Republican” initiative, it is supported by a wide swath of people across the political spectrum. We are calling on every member of the County Council to condemn such behavior and protect the integrity of the election process in MoCo.
