Maryland Governor Wes Moore, fresh off fantasy baseball camp in Florida with the Baltimore Orioles (hat tip – theduckpin.com) has announced his intention to step away from Annapolis and the vagaries of “governing” a state like Maryland this summer to pursue his true passion… semi-pro, minor league baseball. In his absence, Lieutenant Governor (and Montgomery County native) Aruna Miller will lead the state’s executive branch – from a penthouse office overlooking Ocean City, MD.
Governor Moore announced his signing with the Olney-based Cropdusters franchise on Monday. He noted proximity to his buddy’s home, MoCo Councilmember Will Jawando (Democrat, “At Large”), played a part in his decision to sign with the Cropdusters.
“Councilmember Jawando has agreed to host me at his 2.5 acre estate in Sandy Spring for a few weeks while I get in some spring training with the fellas.”
“I am super excited to make this summer the Cropduster’s decade. I plan on starting in center field and batting third. I know we can move Olney forward, into first place in the league. It just takes some determination and a lot of other people’s money.”
Asked about the state’s looming budget shortfall in the next fiscal year, the legislature’s agreed-to tax hikes on Maryland families in 2024, and how funding was shaping up for the collapsed Baltimore Key bridge, Moore was quick to bring it back to leather ball-and-glove related topics.
“Plenty of time to dive into those topics but my sole focus is on the people of Olney and giving them a great centerfielder experience this summer. You saw Ken Griffey back in the day? Well, this is going to be even better. All eyes on me, where they should be.”
The Cropdusters season opens June 1st, on the road.
