Local “Defenders of Democracy” Promote Coronation for Nominee Within 24 Hours of President Joe Biden Announcement, Reject a Mini-Primary

It took roughly 24 hours, but Councilmembers on Montgomery County’s legislative body, sometimes called the “MoCo Council”, quickly and dutifully coalesced around Vice President Kamala Harris as the potential US Presidential Nominee for their political club/tribe in 2024.

Their proclamations of loyalty and (seemingly) enthusiastic endorsement of Vice President Harris as the “blue tribe” nominee for the highest executive office in America came after current (?) President Joe Biden made a stunning announcement that he would not be seeking re-election as President of the United States, on Sunday, July 21st, 2024.

Of course, just nine days prior, Joseph Biden was telling crowds that he was not going “anywhere” and Maryland’s own governor, a few weeks prior to that, was stumping for Joe Biden’s re-election in the swing state of Wisconsin.

Interestingly, CM Evan Glass posted the following on Twitter / X back in early July 2024 in regards to a Baltimore County Council push for new council districts (likely geography-based, not voter-diluting “At Large”):

“More representation is good for democracy”… but, alas, more (potential) representation won’t be available for Democrat party primary voters or even, it appears, DNC convention attendees in Chicago.  The “choice” for representation has been made.  By a select few.

Also, back in December of 2023, CM Glass made the following statement to The Washington Post, regarding how the County Council distributed leadership roles to select committees.

Fascinating.  “Decisions made by consensus… good for democracy.”  Consensus by whom, however?

More to come, we’re sure.
